“Give me gossip or Sherlock Holmes, and I take gossip every time. The detective’s first aid and ever present help in time of doubt.”

Why should anyone want to murder a man like Alfred Brown? Yet slain he was, in his own home and with a poker. The murder seems to be connected to a bout of religious fervour gripping the village of Oldfordham – in particular a battle royal between the Reverend Alexander Childs, and his nemesis Duke Dell, boxer turned revivalist preacher. But Deputy Chief Constable Bobby Owen has numerous other local suspects, and local gossips, to contend with in a puzzler of a case that indeed might lead anywhere.

It Might Lead Anywhere was first published in 1946, the twenty-second of the Bobby Owen mysteries, a series eventually including thirty-five novels. This edition features a new introduction by crime fiction historian Curtis Evans.

“What is distinction? … in the works of Mr. E.R. Punshon we salute it every time.” Dorothy L. Sayers

I was very disappointed with this novel. After reading several of Punshon's other Bobby Owen mysteries, I expected better. The plot in this novel was too convoluted. Too many twists and too many characters mechanically introduced until I finally lost interest. It just didn't go anywhere. Perhaps he was under a deadline... or something. Also, Punshon showed a very different personality, work ethic, and attitude -- and he wasn't as interesting as in the other books.

It Might Lead Anywhere A Bobby Owen Mystery edition by ER Punshon Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Following Bobby Owen is adventure and intrigue at every turn. The characters are wonderfully drawn to make them very real.
Well then, (as Bobby Owen and his tiresome wife said several million times in this book) I've tried the first book in this series and, hoping the writing and plotting would have improved, this much later one. Both were silly and verbose. The author's theory apparently was never use one word when 50 would do just as well.
I have read 5 of the Bobby Owen's mysteries so far - and bought 15 more plus have more in Unlimited to read. I find these books to be on the same level as the Gladys Mitchell Mrs. Bradley mysteries and just as interesting to read.

Since I do not enjoy blood and gore and gut reads, I find that British mysteries written in the 20s 30s and 40s are my favorites. Not at all "cozy" but more complex plots, true puzzles and also true to the time in which they were written.

Read on follow readers - I wasn't disappointed at all.
The earlier Bobby Owens mysteries were much better. These later stories don't measure up. I also find his remarks on the Bible rude and uninformed.
This is an older mystery written just after the second world war. Quite clever, engaging characters. The reader must remember the time frame of the writing as it is the old style of mystery-like Christie, Marsh, Allingham etc.
Only downside with Punshon is that he can be a bit tedious with inreview after interview with the same people about the same subject. Perhaps he is deliberately making it true to life by showing the dull plodding aspect of investigation. it can make it drag about two-thirds of the way through though. But he is good enough overall to read all 34 of his Bobby Owen books.
